What does a Life Coach do?

Life Coaches work in collaboration with their clients to make positive changes in their life – helping their clients progress from where they are now to where they want to be.

A Life Coach helps their client to clarify what it is that they want, create an action plan on how to get there and then supports them on their journey to reaching their goals.

As well as providing support and accountability, a life coach offers an impartial outside perspective, and addresses limiting beliefs they may hold their client back from reaching their potential. 


How is life coaching different from therapy or counselling?

Both life coaches and therapists help their clients make positive changes in their lives, however, there are some important differences.

Therapists are trained mental health professionals who diagnose and treat mental illnesses (coaches do not). 

Therapy or counselling tends to be more introspective and analysis-focussed.

Therapists also address problematic beliefs, behaviours and issues, helping their clients to untangle their past, heal emotional pain, and bring closure to past events.

While therapy focuses on healing trauma from the past, the focus in coaching is more on getting you to where you wish to be next.

Life coaches help their clients focus on what they want to achieve now and in the future.

Life coaching is a forward-looking, action-focused, collaborative process, and life coaches support their clients as they work toward achieving a specific goal or outcome.


How do I know if coaching is right for me?

Life coaching IS right for you if:

  • you have goals, but you don’t know how to reach them

  • you struggle with self-discipline

  • you feel stuck or unmotivated

  • you’re ready to make a change

  • you’re ready to invest in yourself

  • you’re tired of wasting time


Can’t I just do it all myself?

You could. There is lots of practical and inspirational information available to us in books, magazines, websites, blogs, podcasts, seminars, and from well-meaning friends and family.  

But it isn’t lack of information that stops us from making positive changes in our life. 

The challenges are usually

  • getting started,
  • procrastination,
  • self-doubt, and
  • staying on track when things get difficult.

If you’ve ever made a commitment to yourself to improve your well-being, but have been unable to start, stick with it or follow it through, then a coach can help.

A life coach will help you reach your goals and fulfil the commitments you have set for yourself.

Life coaching is NOT for right you if:

A. You want someone to fix or solve what’s wrong in your life.

A life coach brings along skills, resources and tools to help you succeed, but they can’t solve problems for you. 

A life coach will help you see things from a different perspective, question beliefs holding you back and provide support and accountability. However, the only one actually able to take action and make changes is you.

Life coaching is a collaborative process that requires effort on both sides. Success comes from a willingness to take responsibility and a commitment to do the work.

B. You need help with deep-seated psychological issues or conditions.

Life coaching is not therapy.

Therapists diagnose and treat physiological conditions, as well as help their clients untangle their past, heal emotional pain, and bring closure to past events.
